For nearly twelve years, the passenger seat had belonged to Max.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It did not matter whether Daniel was driving five minutes to the grocery store or two hours out of town. If the window was cracked and the keys were in Daniel\u2019s hand, Max was already waiting by the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That morning was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Max climbed into the car more slowly than he used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His muzzle had turned almost completely gray. His back legs needed an extra second to settle beneath him, and when Daniel reached across the center console to scratch behind his ears, the old dog simply leaned into his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel started the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he sat there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several seconds, he could not bring himself to put the car into reverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatment bought them more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a while, Max even seemed almost like himself again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were good mornings when he followed Daniel into the kitchen looking for breakfast. Good afternoons when he stood at the door wanting to go outside. Good nights when he climbed onto his old bed and fell asleep while Daniel watched television nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel began measuring life in those small victories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One more walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One more car ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One more morning with Max waiting beside the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But eventually the bad days became harder to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that morning, after another examination, Daniel was told there was very little left that could realistically be done without prolonging Max\u2019s discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He asked the same questions more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he drove home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several hours later, he helped Max into the passenger seat again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The veterinary clinic was only about twenty minutes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel had made the drive many times before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But when he pulled into the parking lot, he did not immediately open the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He turned the engine off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Max sat quietly beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Outside the windshield, people entered and left the clinic carrying pet carriers and holding leashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside the car, Daniel stared at the steering wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He lowered his head and wiped his eyes quickly, almost as if Max might not notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bad ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The breakup Daniel thought he would never recover from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move to a new house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday mornings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Road trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ordinary evenings nobody photographs because they seem too ordinary to matter at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whenever Daniel was upset, Max had always done essentially the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He came closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And now, sitting outside the veterinary clinic on one of the hardest days Daniel could remember, the old dog was doing it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel wrapped his hand around Max\u2019s paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Max remained beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He did not know what the building outside meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way a dog somehow learns the sound of the refrigerator opening from three rooms away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there is another part that nobody wants to think about in the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dogs usually do not stay as long as we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The puppy eventually develops a gray muzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog that once pulled at the leash begins walking more slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The animal that seemed incapable of getting tired eventually needs help getting into the same car it once jumped into effortlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And one day, love can mean making a decision you desperately wish you did not have to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Daniel, that was the part that hurt most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Max trusted him completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog had no idea why Daniel was hesitating in the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No idea why Daniel kept touching his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, Daniel would have to open the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those last quiet minutes in the parking lot, Max was still exactly where he had always wanted to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paying bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Making decisions for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then one day, in the moment when we are falling apart, they lean against us or place a paw on our hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
