It was early morning in Southern California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cars were moving across nearby roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People were heading to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then someone looked into the San Gabriel River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A gray whale surfaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not an adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was roughly 20 feet long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And somehow, the young whale had traveled nearly three miles into a narrow river channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was no mother beside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within hours, boats arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whale experts came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Crowds gathered along the banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Again and again, people tried to guide the calf toward the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Again and again, it refused to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than 12 hours passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then rescuers began running out of options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By early evening, the official efforts were being abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The young whale was still inside the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But shortly before sunset, it suddenly turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And without anyone leading it, the calf headed toward a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happened after it disappeared beneath that bridge changed the entire story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The unusual sighting began on April 30, 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At around 6 a.m., a young California gray whale was discovered inside the San Gabriel River channel between Long Beach and Seal Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was immediately clear that this was not a normal migration route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf had traveled far inland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a contemporary Los Angeles Times report, experts had never seen a gray whale that far up that river before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was nearly three miles from the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The whale was approximately 20 feet long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts believed it was probably no more than about two months old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That made the situation much more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was not a nearly independent juvenile exploring the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was still a very young calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, NOAA says newborn gray whales are generally about 14 to 16 feet long and weigh around 2,000 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mothers and newborn calves usually migrate north along the U.S. West Coast between March and May after spending winter in the protected waters of Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The timing fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The location did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Somewhere during that northbound journey, this calf had ended up inside a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And its mother was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A young gray whale cannot simply be treated like a small adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At this age, the calf still depended heavily on its mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The whale expert called to the scene, Dennis L. Kelly, warned that the calf still needed its mother’s milk frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Los Angeles Times, he estimated that it needed to nurse roughly every hour or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That created a hidden clock behind the rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf was swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It could still move through the channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But every hour away from its mother mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gray whale mothers normally remain extremely close to their young during this stage of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NOAA monitoring still observes mother-calf pairs traveling together along the California coast during their spring migration north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The river calf had lost that protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rescuers therefore faced two problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They had to get it back toward the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then they had to hope its mother was still somewhere nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, however, they had to convince the whale to move in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That proved far harder than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strange rescue quickly became a public spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People lined the banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Television crews arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Helicopters hovered overhead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For many children watching from shore, it became their first close look at a whale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, teams tried different ways to encourage the calf downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Boats entered the channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People used surfboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jet skis were also involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At one point, a man even entered the water and came dangerously close to touching the whale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The goal sounded simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Position people and boats behind the animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Give it space ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Encourage it toward the river mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then let instinct take over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But whales do not follow human plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It changed direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It remained inside the narrow waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every failed attempt used more daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And every hour meant more time away from its mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By afternoon, concern was replacing curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The San Gabriel River channel was an unnatural place for an animal of that size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Los Angeles Times described the channel as only around 50 feet wide in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 20-foot calf occupied a large portion of that space every time it surfaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were concrete banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Boat engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All of that may have made an already confused animal even harder to direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gray whales usually migrate through coastal waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NOAA notes that eastern North Pacific gray whales make a massive annual journey between Mexico and Arctic feeding grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They often remain relatively close to the West Coast during migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But \u201cclose to shore\u201d is very different from \u201cinside an urban river.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf now had to navigate an environment it had never been meant to enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rescuers could show it a direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They could not explain where that direction led.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And as the hours passed, another uncomfortable possibility began to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps all the attempts to help were making the calf more confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Morning became afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than 12 hours had passed since its discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By early evening, state and federal marine agencies began abandoning their active rescue strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts were increasingly worried about the young whale’s condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It appeared thin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It seemed disoriented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And there was still no visible mother beside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the people who had spent the day trying to help, stopping must have felt wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The whale was still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ocean was still somewhere beyond the channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet continuing to crowd or push the calf might not improve anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So rescuers began backing away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boats stopped trying to force the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf was given more space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dennis Kelly later suggested that this may have mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps, he said, part of the solution was simply leaving the whale alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the time, nobody knew whether that would work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then its behavior changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At around 5:45 p.m., something happened that rescuers had been trying to create all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf changed direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This time, no formation of boats was pushing behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No one was steering from a surfboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The whale simply began moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It headed downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then it approached a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Observers watched as the animal moved toward the dark space underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf did not turn back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It went under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the bank, the next part of its route was harder to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But beyond that bridge were the jetties at Alamitos Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And beyond those jetties was open ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same animal that had resisted hours of human guidance was now moving on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kelly had an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if he was right, the young whale may not have been navigating alone after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gray whales communicate underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A mother and calf can exchange low-frequency sounds while traveling together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1987, Kelly told reporters there was a real possibility that the calf had finally heard its mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He described mothers and calves as making sounds back and forth to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps contact had been reestablished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps the calf had finally received a signal strong enough to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nobody watching from the riverbank could hear that underwater exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the timing was striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For more than 12 hours, humans had tried to direct the animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the rescue efforts eased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The calf turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It went beneath the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it continued toward the mouth of the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If a mother really was calling from offshore, the calf still had to cover the final distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was no guarantee she had stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was no guarantee the young whale would find her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bridge was only the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After passing beneath the bridge, the calf continued downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It moved past the Alamitos Bay jetties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then it reached open water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The river ordeal was finally over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But rescuers still faced the most important question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Had the calf simply returned to the ocean alone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or had the animal it needed most stayed nearby?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The answer came soon afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
State Department of Fish and Game spokesman Curt Taucher told the Los Angeles Times that the calf had reached the sea\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and its mother was waiting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The two whales were seen leaving together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After an entire day of boats, surfboards, jet skis and failed rescue attempts, the most important part happened without anyone touching the calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It found its way out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then it found its mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same young whale that had seemed lost nearly three miles inland was once again swimming beside the animal it depended on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that raised another question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How had the mother known to remain there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no way to reconstruct every underwater moment from that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody could see where the mother had been during all 12 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody recorded a conversation between the two whales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So we should not turn a possibility into certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Kelly’s explanation was compelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mother and calf gray whales communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was possible that the pair had finally heard one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That could help explain the calf’s sudden decision to move toward the ocean after resisting human efforts for most of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Modern science continues to show how tightly connected gray whale mothers and calves are during their spring migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mothers with new calves are among the last gray whales to begin the northward journey from Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They travel along the West Coast while calves continue gaining strength and nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That makes the final scene in 1987 particularly remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The calf had disappeared into a place where its mother could not safely follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It spent more than half a day surrounded by concrete walls, boats and crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People tried repeatedly to guide it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eventually, they stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then the whale turned toward the ocean on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps it finally recognized the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps being left alone reduced the confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Or perhaps somewhere beyond the river mouth, a familiar sound had reached it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We may never know exactly what triggered that turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What we do know is what happened at the other end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The calf emerged into open water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And its mother was still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The whale should not have been there.
