When the rescue boat finally reached the whale, the problem was easy to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A thick fishing rope still ran from her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had been there for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teams had already tried more than once to remove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now they had another chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something had changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swimming beside the enormous black whale was a newborn calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The baby stayed so close that the two animals sometimes appeared almost joined at the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rescuers watched the rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they watched the calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had equipment capable of cutting line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had trained people on the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they were finally close to the whale again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet they did not make the cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason was swimming beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her name was Snow Cone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And by the time her newborn appeared off Georgia in December 2021, she had already carried fishing gear across more than 1,300 miles of ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happened next turned one difficult whale rescue into something even more dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rope Had Been There Since March<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone was already well known to whale researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is North Atlantic right whale Catalog #3560<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers named her for the distinctive callosity pattern near her blowholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 10, 2021, observers found her off Plymouth Harbor, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something was terribly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavy fishing rope was caught around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long sections trailed behind as she swam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trained team from the Center for Coastal Studies responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They made several attempts to help her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, responders managed to remove almost 300 feet of heavy rope<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they could not remove everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone dove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she disappeared before the team could finish the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a whale, leaving with part of the line still attached does not mean the danger has passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rope can tighten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can cut into tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can create drag every time the whale swims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can also interfere with feeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Snow Cone still had an enormous migration ahead of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Rescue Team Found Her Months Later<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nearly two months passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on May 10, a Canadian surveillance aircraft spotted Snow Cone near New Brunswick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her condition appeared worse than it had in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another rescue effort began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Campobello Whale Rescue Team managed to remove more line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following day, crews relocated her again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They removed additional rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, they could not get everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some line remained attached to Snow Cone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That meant the whale had now survived multiple rescue attempts without becoming completely free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet she continued moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She traveled north toward summer feeding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she eventually turned south again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite carrying the entanglement, Snow Cone completed a journey of more than 1,300 miles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She moved from northern waters toward the southeastern United States, where North Atlantic right whales gather during calving season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers already had reason to worry about her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then an aerial survey on December 2 revealed something nobody could ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone was no longer swimming alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There Was a Newborn Beside Her<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The sighting happened near Cumberland Island, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An aerial survey team saw Snow Cone at the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beside her was a tiny right whale calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone had given birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOAA scientists described the discovery as both surprising and concerning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She had likely become entangled while pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That meant she had carried the fishing gear through much of the pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she had migrated south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow, she had produced a living calf while the rope was still caught around her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone was about 17 years old at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a critically endangered species, every calf mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this birth created an entirely new problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mother nursing a calf already faces an enormous energy demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone was doing it while dragging fishing gear and dealing with injuries around her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even worse, the rope itself had not disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now there were two whales swimming around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rescuers Reached Her the Same Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The sighting triggered another response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trained disentanglement specialists from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reached Snow Cone by boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was exactly what everyone had been waiting for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whale had been found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weather allowed a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescuers knew where the remaining gear was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And after months of failed or incomplete attempts, there seemed to be another opportunity to shorten or remove the rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the team quickly encountered a problem that had not existed during the earlier rescues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newborn would not leave Snow Cone\u2019s side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right whale calves spend large amounts of time extremely close to their mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They surface together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They swim alongside one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And young calves depend completely on that proximity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the rescue team, however, that natural behavior made an already dangerous operation far more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They could not treat Snow Cone as a single moving target anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every approach now involved the baby too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Calf Began Moving Around the Rope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As teams continued observing the pair, the danger became even clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The calf did not understand that the line was hazardous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers saw the young whale moving in, through and around the rope<\/strong> attached to its mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That created a frightening possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rescue intended to save Snow Cone could accidentally put her newborn at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The calf itself could become caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or it could suddenly move into the area where responders were trying to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOAA officials were specifically concerned that the baby might become entangled too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was not something rescuers could solve by simply moving faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disentangling a whale already requires teams to work beside an enormous wild animal in open water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now they had a newborn constantly changing position beside the rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closer the rescuers came, the less margin for error they had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that led to the decision viewers of the rescue footage might find hardest to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They Were Close Enough to Help\u2014But It Was Too Dangerous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The rescuers did not simply fail to see the rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They did not lack cutting equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They did not decide Snow Cone no longer needed help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newborn changed the calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 2, responders determined that attempting to remove or further shorten the remaining line was too dangerous while the calf was present<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOAA explained that right whale calves swim so close to their mothers that a safe approach can become extremely difficult or even impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the rescue team did something that can look strange from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rope remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone continued swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the calf remained beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the safest rescue attempt is the one responders decide not to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One wrong movement could have turned one entangled whale into two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team instead continued monitoring the pair and waited for another opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Snow Cone still had to survive every day with the line attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a While, Mother and Calf Kept Going<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During December and January, survey teams repeatedly found Snow Cone and her calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were documented on multiple days along the southeastern U.S. coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At times, the pair traveled surprisingly close to beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 19, researchers obtained better photographs of the remaining entanglement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The images showed rope coming from both sides of Snow Cone\u2019s mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the line had become wrapped around and embedded in her upper jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet at that stage, Snow Cone and her baby did not appear dramatically different in body condition from other mothers and calves in the calving grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That offered some hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pair continued north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By spring, they had traveled back toward New England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But researchers knew appearances could be misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An entanglement creates a constant energy drain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A whale must swim against the drag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If rope damages the mouth or baleen, feeding can also become harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone now had another huge demand on her body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, researchers began seeing signs that the burden was catching up with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Researchers Saw Snow Cone Without Her Calf<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By spring 2022, Snow Cone’s condition had noticeably declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New England Aquarium reported that her body condition had worsened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another detail became impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The calf was no longer beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOAA says the calf had not been seen since April 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By May, observers were seeing Snow Cone alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers could not determine exactly what had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The calf may have separated earlier than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may not have survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no confirmed answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July, scientists found Snow Cone again in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was still carrying the old entanglement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was thinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New lesions had appeared around her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And once again, her calf was nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difficult rescue story had now become something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists were no longer only asking whether they could free Snow Cone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were asking how much longer her body could withstand what the rope was doing to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in September, things became even worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Second Entanglement Appeared<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On September 21, 2022, a New England Aquarium aerial survey team spotted Snow Cone south of Nantucket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scientists immediately recognized her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the photographs showed a devastating change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone still carried the old gear around her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now new fishing gear was wrapped around her tailstock as well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was at least the fifth documented entanglement in her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her condition had deteriorated dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers described her as extremely thin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whale lice covered parts of her body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She moved slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One observer said she could no longer dive normally and instead appeared to sink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New England Aquarium concluded that her prognosis had become extraordinarily poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A response team was notified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Snow Cone was far offshore and the sighting came too late in the day for an immediate rescue attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teams remained ready in case she could be located again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOAA’s latest account says Snow Cone was last sighted in poor condition in October 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither she nor the calf has been seen since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no confirmed final moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No photograph showing exactly what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only the last observations of a whale whose body had carried fishing rope through pregnancy, migration, birth and months of nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone’s Story Was Bigger Than One Rescue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone’s case became famous because the images were extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A huge right whale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fishing rope coming from her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And beside her, a newborn calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the story is not really about one moment when rescuers could not cut a line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is about how difficult it can be to save a whale after entanglement has already happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teams removed hundreds of feet of rope from Snow Cone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They found her again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They tried again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They monitored her across thousands of miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, some of the gear remained embedded around her jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, she became entangled again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why NOAA says prevention is more effective than relying on rescue after the fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stakes are unusually high for North Atlantic right whales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOAA’s December 2025 update estimates roughly 380 animals remain<\/strong>, including only about 70 reproductively active females<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow Cone was one of those females capable of adding calves to a population struggling to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her previous calf had already died after being struck by vessels in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That young whale was only about six months old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Snow Cone became pregnant again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She became entangled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She carried the rope south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She gave birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when rescuers finally reached her newborn pair, they discovered the cruelest complication of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The calf they wanted to protect was also the reason they could not safely move in and cut the remaining line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a few months, mother and baby kept swimming together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the calf disappeared from confirmed sightings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Months later, Snow Cone disappeared too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescue boat had once been only a short distance away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with a newborn moving beside the rope, a few metres of ocean could become an impossible distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
