Kept Lifting Her Dead Calf to the Surface—No One Expected How Long She Would Continue

The tiny calf was slipping beneath the water.

Tahlequah turned back.

She moved beneath the small body, brought it upward again, and continued swimming.

Then it began to sink once more.

And once more, the mother returned.

What researchers were watching in the waters around the Salish Sea in the summer of 2018 was already heartbreaking.

But at first, nobody looking at that first day could know what the next several days would become.

Because Tahlequah was not simply staying beside her newborn for a few minutes.

She was beginning a journey that would eventually be watched around the world.

And the number that came at the end of it would make the story almost impossible to forget.

The Calf Had Been Seen Alive That Morning

On July 24, 2018, a newborn Southern Resident killer whale was reported swimming beside its mother near Clover Point on the Victoria, British Columbia shoreline.

The mother was J35.

She was better known as Tahlequah.

The newborn was a female.

For a critically endangered population in which every successful birth mattered, the sighting should have been extraordinary news.

A Center for Whale Research team was already working in Haro Strait and headed toward the whales to document the newborn for its long-term population study.

But the situation changed before researchers could reach them.

By the time they arrived, the calf was dead.

The pod had already traveled several miles from where the newborn had first been reported alive.

There was no long period in which Tahlequah simply remained motionless beside the body.

The whales were moving.

And Tahlequah was moving with them.

The problem was that her calf could no longer keep itself at the surface.

So the mother began doing it for her.

Every Time the Calf Sank, Tahlequah Retrieved Her

A dead newborn orca does not swim alongside its mother.

Its body can slip beneath the surface.

That meant Tahlequah had to keep changing her own movement if she wanted the calf beside her.

Researchers watched her support the little body on her forehead.

At other moments, she pushed it through the water.

The sea was not perfectly calm.

Center for Whale Research observers described Tahlequah pushing and supporting the calf in choppy conditions as the group traveled toward San Juan Island.

Imagine the physical sequence.

The mother moves forward.

The calf slips.

She changes direction.

She goes beneath it.

She raises it again.

Then she continues.

There was no rescue team holding the calf for her.

There was no platform beneath it.

There was only the mother, the body of her newborn, and open water.

And she continued doing it through the day.

Even after the sun began to disappear.

At Sunset, Other Females Gathered Nearby

Tahlequah was not completely isolated from her pod.

That first evening produced another observation that made the story even more unusual.

A witness near Eagle Cove on San Juan Island reported seeing a group of five or six female killer whales gathered tightly at the mouth of the cove.

They remained near the surface for close to two hours.

The witness described them moving together in a close circle as the light faded.

It was too dark to determine clearly whether Tahlequah was still keeping the calf at the surface during that entire period.

Researchers did not claim to know exactly what the gathering meant.

But the scene showed something important.

Tahlequah was still traveling within the social world of her pod.

And by sunset the following day, she was still pushing the calf.

That already placed the event far beyond a brief reaction immediately after the calf’s death.

Yet the story was only beginning.

Orca Mothers Have Been Seen Carrying Dead Calves Before

Tahlequah’s behavior did not appear from nowhere.

Cetaceans, including killer whales and dolphins, have previously been observed supporting or transporting dead young.

The bond between a mother and a dependent calf is intense.

A newborn killer whale relies heavily on its mother.

It travels beside her.

It learns within a family network that may remain together for decades.

So scientists were not shocked simply because Tahlequah had remained with her calf after death.

What became extraordinary was the persistence.

In its original 2018 release, the Center for Whale Research noted that killer whales and dolphins had been known to support dead calves for periods reaching roughly a week.

Tahlequah was moving toward that point.

Then past it.

And she still had not stopped.

The behavior would eventually become so closely associated with her that researchers gave the journey a name.

But that name makes more sense only after understanding what else was happening around her.

This Was Happening Inside an Endangered Population

Tahlequah was not just any killer whale.

She belonged to the Southern Resident killer whale population.

That made the death of one newborn part of a much larger problem.

At the time of the calf’s death, the Center for Whale Research reported extremely poor recent reproductive success among Southern Residents.

The organization said that roughly 75 percent of newborns during the previous two decades had failed to survive, and that recent pregnancies had produced no viable offspring during the preceding three years.

NOAA identifies several major threats facing Southern Residents, including insufficient prey—particularly salmon—along with vessel traffic and underwater noise, and pollution or contaminants.

So when Tahlequah lost her calf, researchers were seeing two stories at the same time.

One was deeply individual.

A mother was repeatedly returning to the body of her newborn.

The other concerned an entire endangered population struggling to produce surviving calves.

That combination is part of why Tahlequah’s journey drew so much attention.

But even intense scientific attention did not make the next part predictable.

Because the mother still continued.

Days Passed, and the Calf Was Still With Her

A day became several days.

The mother remained with the body.

Reports continued.

Observers kept watching.

The enormous physical demands were difficult to ignore.

Tahlequah still had to travel with her pod.

She still had to breathe.

She still had to navigate moving water.

And whenever the calf slipped away from the position where she could support it, she had to adjust again.

Scientists also had another concern.

Her own condition.

NOAA Fisheries and other members of the response effort monitored Tahlequah as the event continued.

There was no simple way to ask what she was experiencing.

Researchers can observe behavior.

They can document movement.

They can photograph body condition.

But assigning a precise human emotion to another species is much harder.

Still, the Center for Whale Research eventually used a phrase that captured how extraordinary the behavior looked from the outside.

They called it a “Tour of Grief.”

And Tahlequah had still not reached the end of it.

She Was Carrying the Calf Far Beyond One Familiar Bay

There is another reason the video of a mother lifting a calf does not fully explain this story.

Tahlequah was not performing the behavior in one small protected area.

She was traveling.

Day after day, the distance accumulated.

This meant the act seen in one photograph or one short piece of footage was only a fraction of what was occurring.

She had to repeat the behavior while the pod moved through the inland waters of the Salish Sea.

That changes the scale of the story.

A mother nudging her newborn for several minutes is painful to watch.

A mother still doing it after the pod has traveled farther is different.

Then another day passes.

And another.

Eventually, the question was no longer simply:

Why won’t Tahlequah leave the calf?

It became:

How long can she possibly continue?

The answer was finally approaching.

Then Tahlequah Was Seen Without Her Calf

On August 11, researchers saw Tahlequah again in Haro Strait.

This time something was missing.

The calf was no longer on her forehead.

It was no longer being pushed through the water.

Tahlequah had finally let it go.

The Center for Whale Research confirmed that she had carried the deceased newborn for at least 17 days.

During that period, the organization estimated that she and the pod had traveled approximately 1,000 miles.

Seventeen days.

Around a thousand miles.

A behavior that had begun with a newborn slipping beneath the surface had continued through an enormous journey across the Salish Sea.

The calf’s body was never recovered for a necropsy.

Researchers believed it likely sank into the inland marine waters.

There was, however, another important observation that day.

Tahlequah was not seen barely moving or separated from the others.

Researchers watched her vigorously chasing salmon with pod members.

They also reported that photographs showed her appearing to remain in good physical condition following the ordeal.

Her 17-day journey was over.

But Tahlequah’s story was not.

Two Years Later, Researchers Saw a Tiny Whale Beside Her Again

In September 2020, J pod returned to the spotlight.

Researchers were monitoring Tahlequah closely because she had been known to be pregnant.

Then, on September 5, observers reported a tiny calf.

The mother was Tahlequah.

This time, the scene was completely different.

The calf was swimming vigorously beside her.

Researchers estimated that the youngster had been born around September 4.

He was later identified as male and designated J57.

The Center for Whale Research described him as healthy-looking and energetic during those first observations.

He became Tahlequah’s second viable calf, joining her older son J47.

For anyone who remembered the images from 2018, it was difficult not to notice the contrast.

Two years earlier, Tahlequah had repeatedly lifted a newborn that could no longer swim.

Now another tiny calf was moving beside her under his own power.

The earlier loss had not disappeared from her history.

Nothing could change those 17 days.

But her story had gained another chapter.

And that is why the image of Tahlequah carrying her calf became so much bigger than one sad photograph.

It showed a behavior researchers could measure in days and miles.

But the part that made millions of people stop and watch was much simpler.

A newborn kept sinking.

And its mother kept turning back.

Editor’s Note: Tahlequah, also known as J35, is a real Southern Resident killer whale.
