Beside her was her young calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there was no open Pacific horizon around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the pair were swimming through the Sacramento River system, surrounded by riverbanks, bridges and freshwater \u2014 eventually reaching roughly <strong>90 miles inland from the ocean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother and calf would soon become known as <strong>Delta and Dawn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what began as an extraordinary wildlife sighting was about to become a rescue watched around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Mother and Calf Where Whales Shouldn&#8217;t Be<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humpback whales are ocean animals built for migrations that can span thousands of miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delta and Dawn were believed to have entered San Francisco Bay while traveling along the California coast. But instead of continuing through the Pacific, they moved farther inland through the bay-and-river system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they kept going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the pair eventually traveled through <strong>three bays and past five bridges<\/strong>, reaching the Port of Sacramento before beginning the long journey back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one could say with certainty why they had gone so far inland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they became disoriented. Maybe they were exploring an unfamiliar route. Whatever caused it, the result was extraordinary: a mother humpback and her calf were now deep inside a freshwater system where simply pointing them toward the ocean was proving far harder than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Every Mile Made the Problem Bigger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, the sight of two whales so far inland created excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands of people came to see them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But scientists were becoming increasingly worried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both whales had significant wounds on their bodies, believed to have resulted from a vessel encounter. Their extended stay in fresh water was also causing their skin condition to deteriorate, and the wounds were becoming a serious concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calf made the situation especially urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dawn was still traveling closely with her mother, meaning rescuers weren&#8217;t dealing with one independent adult whale. Whatever happened next had to work for both animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they were surrounded by potential wrong turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sacramento Delta contains channels, sloughs and waterways that could lead the whales even farther from the route back toward San Francisco Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wrong decision by the animals \u2014 or an overly aggressive attempt by humans to move them \u2014 could make the situation worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do You Turn Two Humpback Whales Around?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no simple way to tell Delta, <em>the ocean is that way<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So rescue teams began experimenting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists tried playing underwater recordings intended to encourage the whales to move. Boats were also positioned strategically in attempts to influence their direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one point, officials prepared a more forceful acoustic herding technique involving pipes struck from boats to create underwater noise behind the whales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Delta and Dawn did not simply follow a straight line home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They moved downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At times they changed direction again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One particularly difficult point came around the <strong>Rio Vista Bridge<\/strong>, where the whales lingered despite being much closer to the route toward the ocean than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rescue was becoming a strange contest between human planning and two enormous wild animals making their own decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And meanwhile, the clock was still running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their Wounds Created Another Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting Delta and Dawn moving was only part of the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their physical condition was deteriorating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterinarians were particularly concerned about trauma wounds and the effects of remaining in freshwater for so long. The Marine Mammal Center reported that by the whales&#8217; eleventh day in fresh water, their skin condition had worsened and their wounds had become infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That led the rescue team to attempt something remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of capturing the whales \u2014 an enormously risky proposition \u2014 veterinarians developed a way to administer medication while Delta and Dawn remained free-swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both whales were given carefully measured antibiotics using specialized delivery equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution described the operation as the <strong>first successful administration of antibiotics to free-swimming whales<\/strong> of this kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rescue had gone far beyond simply trying to guide two animals down a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists were now treating enormous moving whales in open water while simultaneously trying to persuade them to travel dozens of miles toward the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Then Delta Began Moving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After days of uncertainty, something changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delta and Dawn began making meaningful progress downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They covered stretches of river that had previously taken days to negotiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even then, no one could simply declare the rescue successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead were more bridges, more channels and more opportunities for the whales to stop or turn back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 27, the pair passed beneath the Rio Vista Bridge and continued downstream. By the following day, they had reached saltier waters around Suisun Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were finally getting closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Pacific was still ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Five Bridges, Three Bays\u2014and One Final Journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scale of what Delta and Dawn had done becomes clearer when viewed on a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These weren&#8217;t whales that had wandered a few miles into a harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had penetrated deep into California&#8217;s waterways and then had to retrace that journey while injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WHOI summarized their route as roughly <strong>90 miles inland, through three bays and past five bridges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they moved west, officials continued tracking them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, on May 29, Delta and Dawn passed through the remaining waterways toward San Francisco Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Mammal Center reports that the mother and calf <strong>made their way back to the open sea<\/strong> that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After nearly three weeks of uncertainty, the river was finally behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pacific was ahead again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Did They Swim So Far Inland?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That part of the story never received a neat answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists could document where Delta and Dawn traveled. They could study their injuries.
