At first, observers may have expected the behavior to last only a few minutes. A mother\u2019s instincts do not disappear at the exact moment her calf stops breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the orca did not release the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the hours passed, the same painful sequence continued. Whenever the calf slid away and began to sink, its mother dove after it, brought it back up and resumed travelling with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The behavior continued after sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It continued the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, researchers realized that they were witnessing something far beyond a brief response to a newborn\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mother would carry her calf for 17 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Years later, she would face the same tragedy again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The accompanying Reel is a modern visual reconstruction inspired by documented wild-orca behavior. It is not original footage of the whale or either calf described in this article.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The mother was J35, a Southern Resident killer whale also known as Tahlequah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On July 24, 2018, witnesses near Victoria, British Columbia, reported seeing her newborn female calf alive and swimming beside her. A Center for Whale Research team travelled toward the family to document the birth for its long-term population study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time the researchers reached the pod, the calf had died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The family had already travelled several miles from the first sighting. Mothers from several dolphin and whale species have carried calves, pushed them upward or remained near their bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most documented cases end far sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tahlequah kept going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n J pod travelled through the interconnected coastal waters between Washington State and British Columbia. The mother moved with them while balancing, pushing or retrieving the calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Her effort lasted for at least 17 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During that period, the pod covered approximately 1,000 miles through the Salish Sea. On August 11, the Center for Whale Research finally saw Tahlequah vigorously chasing salmon with other members of her pod. She no longer carried the calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The researchers described her as active and in good physical condition after the ordeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The calf\u2019s body probably sank into the inland waters, preventing scientists from conducting a necropsy and determining exactly why it died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tahlequah had finally released it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet the question surrounding her behavior remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The word \u201cgrief\u201d feels natural when people watch a mother repeatedly retrieve her dead newborn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Still, scientists must use emotional labels carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Researchers can observe an animal\u2019s actions. It found that toothed whales\u2014including orcas and dolphins\u2014showed much more attention toward dead members of their own species than baleen whales did. Southern Residents remain closely connected to their maternal relatives throughout their lives. Hormonal and behavioral systems prepare a mother to protect, support and guide a newborn. Those systems may not switch off immediately after a sudden death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, instinct alone may not explain why some mothers stop within hours while others continue for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Individual personality, previous experience, social support and the strength of the mother\u2013calf bond could all influence the response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scientists still lack enough observations to give one final explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That uncertainty does not make the behavior less meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In fact, it reveals how little humans still understand about death inside an orca society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The video reconstruction shows distant dorsal fins continuing ahead while the mother falls behind with the calf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That visual idea fits the emotional structure of the story, although the Reel does not reproduce one exact documented moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tahlequah did not travel through an empty ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Members of J pod remained part of the journey. The group\u2019s exact understanding and intention remain unknown, but the mother did not experience the event entirely alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Orca families coordinate their daily lives through sound and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They may separate briefly while hunting, yet their social relationships remain central to survival. The same individual had now responded to another newborn\u2019s death in a remarkably similar way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scientists still could not measure everything she experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, they no longer needed to wonder whether the first 17-day journey represented a random or completely isolated reaction from Tahlequah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When tragedy returned, so did the behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tahlequah belongs to the Southern Resident killer whale population, which primarily depends on Chinook salmon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The population faces several connected threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Insufficient prey can leave whales with less energy for pregnancy, nursing and survival. Vessel traffic and underwater noise may interfere with hunting and communication. Pollution also creates long-term health risks because contaminants accumulate in the bodies of top predators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During periods of poor nutrition, stored contaminants may enter the bloodstream as whales burn body fat. Those chemicals can affect immune function and reproduction. NOAA identifies prey availability, vessel disturbance and pollution among the major threats facing Southern Residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In January 2025, NOAA reported that only 73 Southern Resident killer whales remained. The agency also stated that only about one-third of pregnancies produced a viable calf and roughly half of the calves born died before reaching maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not every calf death has the same cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Still, each loss carries unusual weight in such a small population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A newborn female holds particular importance because she could eventually produce future generations.
