It remained so close that an observer might have assumed it was her calf.

However, the baby carried none of the markings researchers expected.

There was no white eye patch.

Its head looked rounder. Its body was almost entirely charcoal grey.

Then the observers realized that the newborn beside the orca did not belong to her species.

It was a long-finned pilot whale calf.

No adult pilot whale was anywhere in sight.

The Calf Hidden Beside the Orca

The encounter happened on August 12, 2021, west of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Researchers aboard a whale-watching vessel found three familiar orcas: two adult females and one adult male. They had documented the trio repeatedly since 2012 and knew them as a stable social group.

One female, identified as SN0540 and nicknamed Sædís, immediately drew their attention.

A newborn calf was travelling beside her.

For 21 minutes, the researchers watched the unusual pair. Throughout the entire observation, they did not detect any other pilot whales or additional cetaceans nearby.

The calf stayed beside Sædís for almost the whole encounter.

Only twice did it surface several metres away from her. Each time, it returned to the protected position close to her body.

This did not look like two animals that had simply crossed paths.

The newborn appeared to depend on the orca.

The unanswered question was why.

It Was Not an Orca Calf

From a distance, a very young pilot whale can resemble a dark calf travelling beside a larger cetacean.

Closer photographs revealed the difference.

The newborn had a rounded forehead, a dark-grey body and no white orca eye patch. Researchers also noticed strong fetal folds along its sides—temporary creases that remain visible shortly after birth.

Those folds allowed the team to classify it as a newborn rather than an older calf.

Yet the photographs revealed something more troubling.

The area behind the calf’s blowhole had sunk inward. Its trunk looked unusually narrow, and its overall body condition appeared poor.

Researchers classified the newborn as emaciated.

Therefore, the calf had not simply wandered briefly beside the orcas while in good health.

It already appeared weak.

Whatever had happened before the vessel arrived may have left it without the nourishment a newborn needed.

The Position That Made Researchers Look Twice

The calf travelled in what scientists call the echelon position.

A young whale swimming in this formation stays beside and slightly behind a larger animal’s shoulder. The pressure wave produced by the adult’s body reduces some of the effort required for the calf to move forward.

In effect, the adult creates a small area of easier water.

Newborn cetaceans often use this position beside their mothers because they cannot yet travel as efficiently as stronger animals. The formation may help them conserve energy while remaining close enough for protection and nursing.

During the Iceland encounter, the pilot whale calf stayed in echelon position beside Sædís for nearly the full 21 minutes.

That detail gave the scene its emotional weight.

The newborn was not following far behind.

It had placed itself where a calf would normally travel beside a caregiver.

Meanwhile, the female orca continued to allow it there.

The Orca Had Never Been Seen With a Calf

Researchers had followed Sædís and her companions for years.

Their records included 21 encounters with the group between 2012 and 2022. During most of those sightings, the same three adult orcas travelled together.

However, researchers had never documented Sædís with a calf of her own.

That history opened several possibilities.

Perhaps she had never successfully produced a calf.

Perhaps she had lost one before observers could document it.

Alternatively, she may simply have shown caregiving behaviour toward an unrelated newborn that approached her.

The researchers could not determine which explanation was correct.

They also could not confirm whether Sædís had recently experienced a miscarriage or the loss of a newborn. No direct evidence supported that possibility, although the researchers discussed it as one potential explanation for her apparent interest in the pilot whale calf.

Whatever motivated her, Sædís accepted an enormous burden.

Helping a newborn travel requires energy.

Allowing it to remain in her pressure wave could also affect her own movement and foraging.

Still, the little grey calf remained beside her.

Adoption, Abduction or a Lost Baby?

Once researchers confirmed the calf’s species, one question became impossible to avoid:

How had it reached the orca group?

The observation began after the association had already formed. Consequently, no one saw the moment the newborn first encountered Sædís.

Perhaps the calf had become separated from its mother and approached the orca on its own.

Pilot whale calves sometimes travel beside adults and juveniles beyond their immediate maternal unit. Researchers have suggested that calves may initiate some caregiving relationships themselves. A lost newborn might therefore seek the body and pressure wave of another large cetacean.

However, another possibility was more disturbing.

Sædís may have intercepted or deliberately taken the calf from a pilot whale group.

The evidence cannot prove that scenario. Nevertheless, researchers could not rule it out.

As a result, the encounter produced three competing descriptions: adoption, accidental caregiving or “calf-napping.”

Each interpretation changes the story.

In one version, a female orca encountered a helpless orphan and allowed it to remain beside her.

In another, a confused newborn chose the wrong species because it desperately needed an adult.

In the darkest version, the calf’s real mother may not have surrendered it willingly.

The Other Orcas Did Not Take Over

Sædís did not travel alone.

The adult female Dragonfly and the adult male Zale remained with her throughout the encounter. However, researchers recorded no visible interaction between either of them and the pilot whale calf.

They tolerated its presence, but the newborn’s close association remained specifically with Sædís.

Meanwhile, the group continued foraging.

The orcas had previously been documented feeding on Atlantic herring, and they displayed foraging behaviour during the observation with the calf.

Yet food presented the greatest problem for the newborn.

A pilot whale calf this young still needed milk.

It could not survive by sharing herring with adult orcas.

Could the Orca Actually Feed It?

Researchers found no evidence that Sædís was lactating.

They had not seen her with a calf before the encounter, and no nursing orca calf travelled within the group at the time.

Therefore, the scientists considered it unlikely that the pilot whale newborn received nourishment from her.

That makes the calf’s condition especially painful.

Sædís could provide a pressure wave.

She could allow the newborn to remain close.

She might offer protection from immediate dangers.

However, unless she produced milk, she could not provide what the calf needed most.

The depression behind its blowhole and its narrowed body suggested that the shortage had already become severe.

The orca may have helped the calf travel.

She may even have kept it from becoming completely alone.

But companionship could not reverse starvation.

A Kind of Care Never Documented Before

Researchers described the behaviour as possible interspecific alloparental care—an adult caring for a youngster that belongs to another parent and, in this case, another species.

They also considered it a possible example of epimeletic or nurturing behaviour, in which a healthy individual supports an impaired, distressed or dead companion.

Scientists had already documented orcas assisting members of their own species.

However, this became the first documented report of an orca displaying apparent epimeletic or alloparental behaviour toward the calf of a different species.

That does not prove Sædís understood herself as the calf’s new mother.

Nor does it prove that the bond was mutual.

The researchers could only record what happened in front of them:

A weak newborn pilot whale travelled in the maternal position beside an adult female orca.

The female allowed it to remain there.

And the pair stayed together until the vessel left.

Then the Calf Disappeared From the Record

The researchers eventually ended their observation while the orca group continued foraging.

They did not see how the association ended.

They did not know whether the calf remained with Sædís for another hour, another day or much longer.

The next confirmed sighting of the same orca group occurred in March 2022.

The pilot whale calf was no longer with them.

No later observation confirmed that the newborn returned to its own species.

No evidence showed another pilot whale adopting it.

Researchers also did not recover a body.

Its fate remains unknown.

Still, given its newborn age, poor condition and likely lack of milk, the photographs offered little reason for optimism.

The Orcas Approached Pilot Whales Again

Almost one year later, researchers observed the same three-orca group during another unusual encounter.

On July 19, 2022, Sædís, Dragonfly and Zale travelled among a larger association of ten orcas. Around 40 long-finned pilot whales approached and pursued them.

Usually, Icelandic orcas move away from pursuing pilot whales.

This time, however, the orcas repeatedly turned back toward the pilot whale group after the pursuit stopped. The sequence happened several times.

The researchers proposed a striking possibility.

Sædís or the group might have been approaching in an effort to obtain another calf, while the pilot whales chased them to protect their young.

That interpretation remains speculative. No calf changed groups during the observed encounter, and scientists cannot know the orcas’ intention.

Even so, the behaviour did not match the usual pattern researchers had documented between the two species.

The mystery surrounding the first newborn suddenly became even deeper.

It Was Not the Last Time

Later research showed that the 2021 case was not completely isolated.

Scientists documented two more encounters off southern Iceland in June 2022 and June 2023 involving newborn pilot whales and groups of orcas.

Again, no other pilot whales were present during those observations.

The calves surfaced near the orcas, travelled in echelon position and, at times, were lifted partly out of the water. Researchers saw no clear signs of predation, although they could not determine whether the behaviour represented care, play, hunting practice or something else.

Importantly, those later encounters involved different individual orcas.

Therefore, the behaviour may not have belonged only to Sædís.

Several Icelandic orca groups had now been seen with newborn pilot whales whose mothers were absent.

Rather than solving the original mystery, the new sightings made it larger.

What Happened Before the Researchers Arrived?

Every explanation leaves a missing piece.

If the calf had become orphaned, what happened to its mother?

If it voluntarily approached Sædís, how did a newborn recognize that her body wave could help it?

If Sædís took the calf, how did she separate it from a highly social group of pilot whales?

And if she intended to care for it, did she understand that she might not be able to feed it?

The scientists could not answer those questions because they witnessed only the middle of the story.

The association had already begun before they arrived.

It continued after they left.

Everything most important happened beyond human sight.

The Tiny Grey Shape Beside Her

For 21 minutes, the newborn remained tucked beside an animal that should not have been its mother.

The female orca surfaced first.

Then the small rounded head appeared inside the water beside her.

Whenever the calf drifted away, it returned to the same protected position.

Perhaps Sædís had taken it.

Perhaps she had found it alone.

Perhaps the newborn had chosen her because there was no other adult left to follow.

The photographs cannot tell us which story is true.

They show only a weak baby travelling in the place where its mother should have been—and a female orca that did not force it away.

By the next confirmed sighting, the little grey calf had vanished.

Whether Sædís tried to save it, temporarily adopted it or became part of the reason it was separated may never be known.

For a brief time in the cold water west of Iceland, however, the baby beside the orca was not hers.

And she still kept it close.

At first, the small grey shape was easy to miss.
