Hamish Stewart was looking down into cold New Zealand water, searching for scallops, when the people on the boat saw something he could not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three dark dorsal fins were moving in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, the animals appeared to be traveling through the water normally. Then Stewart\u2019s sister watched them become aware of her brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fins changed direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The orcas began moving toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart was still floating at the surface off Rangipukea Island, near New Zealand\u2019s Coromandel Peninsula. His mask was pointed into the water, his attention focused below, and he had no idea that three of the ocean\u2019s most powerful predators had begun approaching from behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His sister, Kylie Strongman, was filming from the family\u2019s boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She could see the entire situation unfolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her brother could not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The family had already seen orcas that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before Stewart entered the water, they had stopped near a beach on Rangipukea Island and watched orcas and stingrays swimming nearby. The encounter had seemed exciting rather than threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later, when the boat moved to another area so Stewart could dive for scallops, the orcas were no longer visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was no reason to believe they were still close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart, an experienced diver, entered the water while his sister and father remained aboard their 6.8-metre boat. He began searching below the surface, unaware that the animals had returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then his sister spotted the fins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She watched the three orcas alter their route and begin heading directly toward her brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the boat, the change was impossible to miss. Stewart, however, was still facing downward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The family had only seconds to get his attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Strongman and her father revved the boat\u2019s engine to signal that Stewart needed to surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He heard the warning and came up quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As he reached the surface, water entered his mask and blocked his vision. That accident may have prevented him from seeing the most unsettling moment of the encounter: one of the orcas swam directly beneath him while he was trying to understand why his family was shouting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the boat, his sister could see the enormous black-and-white body below her brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart could not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was floating above an animal powerful enough to move through the water almost without effort, yet he saw only water inside his mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His sister called out that the animals were coming directly toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was when Stewart made the decision that transformed the encounter from a distant sighting into a face-to-face moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of keeping his head above the water, he looked beneath the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart lowered his mask back into the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the orcas was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The animal had passed beneath him and turned. Stewart suddenly found himself looking at its enormous black-and-white head from approximately one metre away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He later remembered seeing little more than the animal\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Stewart, the moment seemed to last far longer than it probably did. Suspended in cold water, he had no boat deck beneath his feet, no barrier and no reliable way to predict what the orca would do next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He described feeling like a seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was an understandable reaction. Orcas are apex predators capable of hunting seals, sharks, fish, dolphins and even other whales. New Zealand orcas are also known for hunting rays in shallow coastal water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the orca did not bite him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It did not ram him or attempt to drag him underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the close inspection, the animals regrouped and eventually moved away. Stewart returned safely to the boat\u2014although he completed the trip without collecting the scallops he had entered the water to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is the question the footage cannot answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart\u2019s dark hooded wetsuit, horizontal position and movement at the surface could have created a silhouette resembling marine prey. His sister wondered whether the animals might have seen him as something seal-like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also considered another possibility: the orcas may have been curious or protective because younger animals were nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither explanation was confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The video shows the orcas changing direction, approaching Stewart and passing extremely close. It does not reveal what they intended to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Orcas are intelligent, socially complex animals capable of investigating unfamiliar objects and animals in their environment. A close approach does not automatically mean an attack was about to occur. At the same time, curiosity from an animal of that size can still create a dangerous situation for a swimmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most accurate conclusion is also the most unsettling one: Stewart was being closely examined by the orcas, but nobody can know exactly what they were thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Zealand is home to a small and highly mobile population of orcas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Current conservation information estimates that roughly 150 to 200 individuals use New Zealand waters. They are classified as Nationally Critical under the country\u2019s threat classification system, making each animal important to the survival of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are often seen traveling in relatively small groups, which makes the three-animal group encountered by Stewart typical of local sightings. Researchers have documented New Zealand orcas moving along both the North and South Island coasts and traveling very long distances in search of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their feeding behavior is especially distinctive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While different orca populations around the world specialize in different prey, New Zealand orcas are famous for hunting stingrays and other rays in shallow coastal environments. That may help explain why Stewart\u2019s family had seen orcas and stingrays in the same general area earlier that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The animals were likely using the coastline as part of their natural feeding and travel route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart had entered their environment without knowing they were still nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wild orcas have not been documented carrying out a deliberate fatal attack on a human in the way many other large predators have. That record is reassuring, but it should never be interpreted as proof that entering the water near them is safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An adult orca is immensely powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A large male can reach approximately eight metres in length and weigh several tonnes. Even a calm animal could seriously injure a swimmer through an accidental collision, tail movement or sudden change in direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Strongman said one of the animals appeared approximately as long as the family\u2019s 6.8-metre boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From her position above the water, she could see the difference in scale more clearly than her brother could. He appeared small and exposed at the surface while the dark bodies moved around and beneath him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fear did not come from an attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It came from uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The family could see the orcas coming, but they could not predict whether the animals would turn away, investigate the boat, approach Stewart or respond to him as potential prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most extraordinary part of the story may be the moment Stewart never actually saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because his mask filled with water when he surfaced, he did not see the first orca pass directly underneath him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His sister did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That creates two completely different versions of the same encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From Stewart\u2019s perspective, he heard the engine, surfaced in confusion, cleared his vision and then suddenly found himself facing an orca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the boat, his family watched the animal approach, disappear beneath him and emerge nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The viewer of the footage shares the family\u2019s perspective. We can see the danger approaching before Stewart understands what is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why the encounter remains so effective on video. It is not only about a man swimming near orcas. It is about the frightening difference between what the people on the boat knew and what the person in the water could see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Zealand\u2019s Department of Conservation now advises people not to swim within 100 metres of orcas. Boats should remain at least 50 metres away, move slowly and quietly, avoid blocking the animals\u2019 route and never chase or deliberately surround them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If orcas unexpectedly approach someone already in the water, current DOC advice is to remain calm and leave the water rather than attempting to swim closer or interact with the animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart had not deliberately entered the water beside the orcas. The animals had disappeared from sight before he began diving and returned while he was already searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His family\u2019s decision to alert him immediately was therefore important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The encounter should not be treated as evidence that swimming near wild orcas is harmless. It was an unexpected event that ended safely, not an interaction that should be repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afterward, Stewart was able to look back on the encounter as an extraordinary experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During those few seconds in the water, however, he had no way of knowing how it would end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three orcas had noticed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One passed directly beneath him while his vision was blocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When he looked down again, an enormous black-and-white face was waiting approximately one metre away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, almost as quickly as the animals had arrived, the moment was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stewart returned to the boat unharmed. The orcas regrouped and continued on their way. No attack occurred, and no physical contact was reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the footage preserves something that is easy to forget when watching wildlife from a safe distance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the open ocean, a person may not be the first to notice that they are no longer alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes the people on the boat see the fins change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes the animal is already beneath the swimmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And sometimes the truth becomes visible only when the person finally looks down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
