Many of the Caribbean reef sharks gliding through these waters carried fishing hooks lodged in their mouths — rusted, painful, and impossible for the animals to remove on their own. Some had been there so long that algae and growth had begun to cover the metal.

To most people, a shark is a thing to fear. But one woman looked at these wounded predators and saw something else entirely: animals in pain, asking for help. Her name is Cristina Zenato — and the world calls her the “Shark Whisperer.”

A Quarter-Century With Sharks

Cristina Zenato has spent more than 25 years diving with sharks off the south shore of Grand Bahama Island. Over that time, she has built an extraordinary relationship with a group of Caribbean reef sharks — animals most people would never dream of approaching, let alone touching.

She knows them as individuals. She has given them names — Hook, Crook, Stumpy, Foggy Eye, Black Spot — and she recognizes each one on sight. To her, they are not monsters. “I call these sharks my babies,” she has said. “They are part of my family.”

Why the Hooks Are There

The hooks come from fishing. Sometimes a shark bites a fish that is already hooked on a line; sometimes the hook catches as the line passes by. Either way, the barb lodges in the shark’s mouth or jaw — and once it’s in, the animal has no way to get it out.

Left in place, these hooks cause constant pain and difficulty feeding. They can lead to infection. And because sharks must keep eating to survive, a hook in the mouth can slowly wear an animal down. As Zenato puts it, watching the damage these hooks cause to the sharks she loves simply broke her heart. So she decided to do something almost no one else in the world would dare.

A Hand Inside a Shark’s Mouth

Here is the part that astonishes people: Cristina removes the hooks by hand.

Over her years of diving, she became one of the first people in the world able to induce a calm, trance-like state in sharks through gentle touch. By carefully turning a shark and stroking it in just the right way, she can settle the animal into a state of relaxation — and in those quiet moments, she reaches in and works the hook free.

Important: this is not something anyone should ever attempt. Cristina’s ability comes from decades of experience, deep knowledge of shark behavior, and a relationship with these specific animals built over many years. What looks almost magical is in fact the result of a lifetime of careful, patient work.

Foggy Eye, the Shark Who Came Back

One story stands out above the rest. A shark Cristina named Foggy Eye had a hook lodged inside her mouth. Cristina reached in and carefully removed it.

What happened next is the kind of moment that stays with you. After the initial shock of being freed, Foggy Eye didn’t swim away in fear. She turned around, came back to Cristina, and offered her head to be petted. And from that day on, Foggy Eye never failed to appear during Cristina’s dives — returning again and again, as if simply to say hello to the person who had freed her.

It is a reminder that the bond between humans and animals can reach even the most feared creatures in the sea.

Over 300 Hooks — and Counting

Cristina now keeps a box filled with the hooks she has pulled from sharks’ mouths over the years. The count has passed 300.

Each one represents a shark relieved of pain — but also a small piece of evidence in a much bigger story. Discarded and lost fishing gear, sometimes called “ghost gear,” is one of the greatest hidden threats to ocean life. Hooks, lines, and nets injure and kill countless marine animals every year, almost always far from human eyes.

Changing How the World Sees Sharks

More than removing hooks, Cristina Zenato has a deeper mission: to change the way we think about sharks.

For decades, films and headlines have painted these animals as mindless killers. But sharks are not the monsters of our imagination. They are ancient, intelligent, and — as the population she works with shows — capable of trusting a gentle human hand. They are also in serious trouble, with many shark species declining sharply due to overfishing and human activity.

“We have been able to elevate a polar bear’s status to make people care,” Cristina has said. She hopes to do the same for sharks — to help the world see them not as villains, but as the remarkable, vulnerable animals they truly are.

A hook stuck in a shark’s mouth for years. A diver brave enough to reach in and remove it. And a shark that came back, not to bite, but to say thank you. Sometimes the most feared creatures in the world just need someone willing to see their pain.

For years, divers in the Bahamas noticed something heartbreaking.
