Or something deeper?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February 2022, a landmark study finally gave us the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\ud83d\udd2c THE STUDY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federica Pirrone and colleagues at the University of Milan surveyed 426 Italian dog owners whose pet dog had died while they also owned at least one other dog. <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-02-dogs-grieving-behavior-death-canine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phys.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings were published in Scientific Reports \u2014 one of the most respected scientific journals in the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8873218\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nih<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What they found was undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\ud83d\udc94 86% OF DOGS GRIEVE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">86% of owners observed negative changes in the surviving dog&#8217;s behavior after the death of their other dog. <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-02-dogs-grieving-behavior-death-canine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phys.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changes included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc3e Playing and eating less<br>\ud83d\udc3e Sleeping more<br>\ud83d\udc3e Becoming more fearful<br>\ud83d\udc3e Whining and barking more often<br>\ud83d\udc3e Searching the home for their missing friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/health-news\/mental-health\/2-24-dogs-feel-grief-when-canine-companion-dies-study-suggests-2656757403.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HealthDay + 3<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These weren&#8217;t small changes. They lasted <strong>for months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\ud83e\udde0 WHY DOGS FEEL DEEPER THAN WE THOUGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patricia McConnell, a certified applied animal behaviorist, reviewed the findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m gratified that the study was done, because it frankly seems impossible that dogs wouldn&#8217;t grieve. They are highly social, some of the most social mammals in the world. And as mammals, they share much of the same neurobiology and physiology that drives our own emotions.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthday.com\/health-news\/mental-health\/2-24-dogs-feel-grief-when-canine-companion-dies-study-suggests-2656757403.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HealthDay<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In simpler words: <strong>Dogs have the same brain chemistry for love and loss that we do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\ud83d\udca7 IT&#8217;S NOT JUST THE LOSS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study revealed something even more heartbreaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having had a friendly relationship with the deceased dog and having a grieving owner made negative behavioral changes and fearfulness more likely in surviving dogs. <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-02-dogs-grieving-behavior-death-canine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phys.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2764\ufe0f <strong>Dogs grieve harder when their friend was beloved<\/strong><br>\u2764\ufe0f <strong>Dogs feel your grief too<\/strong> \u2014 and it makes their grief worse<br>\u2764\ufe0f <strong>When you cry, they suffer with you<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\ud83d\udc3e DO DOGS UNDERSTAND DEATH?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to research from USA Dog Behavior:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dog&#8217;s primary sense is smell. When a dog dies, the scent changes dramatically. If the surviving dog is allowed to sniff the body, many appear calmer afterward. This isn&#8217;t closure in a human sense, but it likely helps the dog recognize that: The companion is no longer responsive. The smell has changed. Something is different. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usadogbehavior.com\/blog\/2026-1-27-do-dogs-understand-death-what-science-and-experience-really-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Usadogbehavior<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here&#8217;s what breaks hearts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dogs who have lost a companion may search their home for a period of time looking for their missing friend. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usadogbehavior.com\/blog\/2026-1-27-do-dogs-understand-death-what-science-and-experience-really-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Usadogbehavior<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t fully understand. They keep waiting. They love each other with everything they have.
